About Us
ERNET India, an autonomous society under Department of Information Technology, is providing Internet access to Education and Research community in the country for over 10 years. ERNET is a nation-wide terrestrial and satellite network with points of presence located in major cities. ERNET backbone is being upgraded to cater for growing bandwidth requirements and the satellite network is being expanded to offer Internet access in remote areas. Focus of ERNET is not limited to just providing connectivity, but to meet entire needs of the education and research institutions by hosting and providing relevant information to their users. R&D and Training are integral parts of ERNET activities.
The ERNET backbone is a judicious mix of terrestrial and satellite-based wide area networks. The Satellite WAN, using VSAT technology, has facilitated reliable and quick access from remote areas. ERNET architecture is based on industry standard TCP/IP protocol, ensuring connectivity from heterogeneous computer systems and local area networks (LANs) at user sites. ERNET has a total gateway capacity of over 500 Mbps which is spread, across different cities. All the international traffic from a local POP is routed through a local gateway link making the access to the Internet faster.
